The Real Reason Menopause Weight Gain Happens
The fitness industry loves telling women their metabolism "shuts down" during menopause.
It's a neat story. It's also not well supported by the evidence.
What the research actually shows
When researchers compared women going through menopause to women who weren't, there was no meaningful difference in metabolic rate once body composition was accounted for. (Karppinen et al.)
Another study followed women through the menopausal transition for five years and found no drop in resting metabolic rate across the transition. Some women in perimenopause actually had a slight increase. (MONET Study / Lovejoy et al.)
And one of the biggest metabolism studies ever done — over 6,000 people across 29 countries, measuring what people were actually burning day to day in real life — found men and women followed almost identical metabolic patterns across adulthood. (Pontzer et al., 2021, Science)
So menopause itself wasn't the thing dramatically reducing calorie burn.
Then why does fat loss feel so much harder?
Because plenty of other things are changing at once:
Reduced muscle mass
Lower daily movement
Disrupted sleep
More fatigue
Higher stress
Hot flushes
Mood changes
Every single one of those affects your hunger, your energy, your motivation — and therefore your consistency. Which is what actually drives results.
It's not that your body stopped working. It's that the conditions got harder.
And honestly? This is good news
If menopause permanently destroyed your metabolism, there'd be nothing you could do about it. You'd just have to accept it.
But muscle mass? Daily movement? Strength training? Protein intake? Sleep?
Those are all things you can influence.
So no — menopause does not magically override the laws of thermodynamics. But it absolutely can make the behaviours that support fat loss harder to maintain.

Which is exactly why strength training and holding onto your muscle becomes more important during menopause, not less.
You're not broken. The strategy just needs to match the season you're in.
